It was an emotional day at Starlynk Bermuda today. After Monty's fall this morning everybody at the team was disoriented. Everything everybody's been working so hard for, fell apart in a spilt second. And then what's next? In the end it was Monty who spoke to his teammates and told them that despite his broken collarbone, he wanted to finish the Kangaroo Tour. He didn't come all the way Down Under in top form to drop out of the tour in the leader's jersey!
Slowly but surely the team spirit returned and everybody agreed to make one last effort to pull Monty through the much feared King's Stage. It was hard and painful and several times Monty lost touch with the bunch only to be returned by his wonderful teammates Kevin, Brock, Lancelot, Finbar and Ward. He worked and cried and worked and cried but he never gave up. In the end, he only lost a few seconds to the race favourites and managed to end up on the GC podium with his broken collarbone!
No, it wasn't the win we secretly dreamed of after the first coupe of stages. But this was something else; something bigger; something better! Monty managed to inspire, to bring hope to the hearts of his fellow countrymen. There's many things you can say about Bermudan cyclists, but one thing's for sure, they'll never give up.
